I immediately realize the irony of this post, it’s midnight and I could head to bed but decided to blog . . .
I’m in crunch mode. My first final is five weeks away, but before I get to those finals, I have to submit the final version of my appellate brief, conduct a two and a half hour trial and do oral arguments on previously mentioned appellate brief.
I have coasted this entire semester and realized several weeks ago that I needed to kick it into high mode. As a result I am operating on 4-5 hours of sleep a night.
There is no rest for the weary. I made a huge error last spring when I registered for classes this fall semester. I had the brilliant idea to stack all of my classes on just two days (and every other Friday) instead of balancing them throughout the week as I normally do. This results in five hours of class on Wednesdays and Thursdays and three hours of class every other Friday after working for over eight hours. This schedule is killing me.
I thought it would work out because I would be able to get all my reading done over the weekend and have Monday and Tuesday for any necessary catch-up. I also recognized that I would be home longer on specific days for my son. At the time I registered I did not know I would have my son 24/7. I made the schedule thinking my son’s father would take him every other weekend. Obviously this has not happened (quick note, still no decision from the judge).
So I’m burning the midnight oil . . .every single d*mn night. To make things more challenging, we’re down one person at work so I am also bringing work home several evenings each week. Again, when I registered for this schedule, I did not anticipate this.
Imagine my joy last night when I got home at 10:00 p.m. from class, and sat down to catch up on reading for one of my classes tonight and discovered I only had 20 pages . . . I finished my reading and made notes. It was 10:47 p.m. I was so overjoyed, I actually tweeted that if I moved fast, I would actually get over six hours of sleep that night
I was premature with the tweet unfortunately
I immediately headed up to bed, double checked my dual alarm setting on my phone, then checked the dual alarm setting on the clock by my bed. At this stage of school/work balance, I require at least four alarm settings to get me out of bed and to work every morning. When I checked the clock/alarm by my bed I saw a third dot by the time.
WTH? I thought this clock only had two alarms, both of which were set and confirmed by the lit dots. What was this third dot?
After about thirty seconds, I realized the third dot was to indicate the time was P.M.
OMG!
When was the last time I went to bed in the P.M.?!
I don’t remember . . .
I squealed with delight over this discovery and promptly settled down to sleep.
Sleep did not come, my brain was too wired and my body was unaccustomed to going to bed “so early”.
Finally, I began to drift to sleep . . . only to hear my son get up and yell for me. He was sick with a stomach bug.
It was well after 1:00 A.M. when I finally went to bed . . .
Someday, I will get more than five hours of sleep . . . but at least I re-discovered that third light on my alarm clock . . .
